Rehearsal: “Master Harold” …and the boys.

The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town does not only present theatre  written by Athol Fugard. There are a number of fun productions lined up in the upcoming months, including Louis Viljoen’s CHAMP, directed by Greg Karvellas, as well as Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show, directed by Matthew Wild.

But of course there is Fugard. Right now, as Fugard’s first Afrikaans play, Die Laaste Karretjiegraf (written with Riana Steyn) ends it’s first run in The Fugard Studio Theatre, one of his most well known plays is introducing itself to the rehearsal room. You may have seen a previous production or a film version of Master Harold and the Boys. The story revolves around the relationship between Hally, a 17 year old boy, and the two men who work for his mother in her tea room in an apartheid South Africa (1950).

Here are a few photos from one week into rehearsals. The actors were still learning their lines and beginning to work out their blocking with the director (where they will be at each point during the play, similar to dance choreography). The fabulous tango teacher, Mark Hoeben, came into rehearsals on a rainy Saturday morning (with flu) and flitted across the floor like Gene Kelly while giving the guys some pointers on posture and ballroom moves. The Fugard Theatre are very excited to introduce Alex Middlebrook to play Master Harold (Hally), who is currently in Grade 11 at Reddam House.  While he has been on stage several times before (Gilbert and Sullivan’s King and I, Fiddler on the Roof and Yeomen of the Guard) Master Harold and the Boys marks Alex’s professional debut to the Theatre. Willie is played by UCT graduate Themba Mchunu (Door, Land of the Cranes). Themba was so enthusiastic to play this part, he travelled all the way from Grahamstown for the audition.MHRehJKramer-523

Sam is played by the celebrated, veteran South African Actor Tshamano Sebe (Green Man Flashing, Jesus Hopped the A Train, Stokvel, Generations). Sebe has also previously played the character of Sam for which he won the Fleur du Cap Award for Best Actor in 1999.MHRehJKramer-520
